Blue Toenails and the Running Jump

Sunday, 22 June 2008

I knew I was about to leap off a cliff. Last week I saw what was at the bottom of it. I had a job interview and got the job. The landlord had our flat valued and having learned that he could earn more money from a new set of tenants, we agreed to part with it in August. Everything can change in a matter of hours.

The night before, I decided to paint my toenails. I wasn’t certain that flip-flops were the most appropriate footwear for a job interview but since I didn’t care enough to not wear them, I thought the least I could do was tidy my feet up. I was bored of crimson and the bronze colour I sometimes use was sticky and hard to apply. So I used blue. Which, as Dave pointed out, was also not entirely appropriate for a job interview. I was a bit neurotic by this time, running round tidying the house for the estate agents (did I increase it’s value?) and finding bits and bobs that I needed to take to the interview, so I started to worry about my decision to go with blue.

Ten minutes early for the interview the next day and tapping my fingers nervously across my CV, I looked down at my toes and thought: none of this matters. This is nothing to be stressed about: look, you have blue toenails! Perhaps this made me less stressed. Perhaps that’s how I got the job.

So if you’re going to jump off a cliff, I highly recommend painting your nails a ridiculous colour. And then jumping.

I’m not looking forward to any of this, but at least I can laugh at my toes.

Oh-oh, an abbreviation I haven't learned yet. Please, what is lqtm? Gotta keep up my street cred with my teenage friends!

No, sorry... I don't get lqtm either! James? Welcome, by the way, and thank you.

A bit hasty there, perhaps... I've just looked it up. It means 'laughing quietly to myself' and I already prefer it to LOL! I like its specificness.

(fingers crossed for apples)

I think blue toenails are not an issue... My son came home last week with his toenails and fingernails painted grey by the girl down the road. I didn't make a big stink about it- but I requested he not wear makeup in my house. (I don't think he did it to wear makeup or be goth- I think he did it for the contact with the girl).

You might think this is a bit much and why should I care, but he is wrestling this week and wrestles for a Lutheran High School. If he is wrestling off season for them he needs to keep the same set of dress code standards they have during the rest of the year. Plus I really don't want to share my makeup with my sons more then I have too. They already steal my cherry lip gloss and all my good flavors of chap- stick, hijack my brush, and lotions.

cute toes... you have there.

Chris - hopefully not far from where we are now. My new job is here so it would kind of defeat the object of taking it if we moved too far away. It's currently a 10 minute walk away - I'd like to avoid changing that too much if possible.

Michelle - Cherry lip gloss... who can blame them? It is tasty!

Happymisfit - Thank you!

Oh yes, lqtm is very nice, ta.

And congratulations on the job, and I like the blue toenails too. The interviewer probably thought you the height of chic!

Probably they didn't even notice! Perhaps flip-flops aren't the most interview-appropriate attire, but on the other hand, how much attention do they pay to your feet?!
